Martin Giles

Martin’s radio career began in the mid 1950’s with Armed Forces Radio while in the service. Since then it has taken him into about every major market in the state of Florida and even some smaller ones, including a stint with 50,000 watt WGTO at Cypress Gardens in the 1960’s. For several years he worked in New York as a news anchor for the ABC Contemporary Network.

In the early 1980’s, the Plant City native returned to Tampa Bay, first as a reporter for WTSP-TV Channel 10, and then as a news anchor for WFLA in 1985. One of his two daughters, Susan, has followed in her father’s footsteps and anchors the news at WUSF-FM.

Giles was 76 when he retired March 1, 2013, citing the increasing workload as his reason for leaving WFLA after 28 years. Sadly he passed away August 14, 2017 at the age of 81.
