Herb Hunt
Herbert Roy Hunt took over the hosting chores of WLCY’s popular “Open Mike” call-in talk show in 1966 when Marshall Cleaver left to do news at Tampa Bay’s new Channel 10 WLCY-TV. Although he covered Tampa as a reporter for the TV operation, he was best known as Johnny Rebel, the night jock on WLCY Radio, and Herbert R. Hunt, the name he used when doing the station’s newscasts.
After leaving WLCY, Herb pulled a short stint in news at WQYK in the mid 70’s and then headed for the Washington, DC area. It was while working there that he passed away from cancer at the age of 48.
