WMTX AM & FM - A History
 |
WMTX-AM 1040 Pinellas Park and WMTX-FM 95.7 Clearwater – In late 1990, Metroplex Communications’ W-Lite 95.7 WNLT became Mix 96 WMTX-FM, broadcasting from studios at 18167 U.S. 19 North in Clearwater, also home to oldies sister station AM-1040 WHBO.
In 1991, AM-1040's call letters flipped to WMTX when Metroplex dropped the oldies format on the five-kilowatt (500 watts night) station and began airing a simulcast of the FM’s adult contemporary format.
The AM/FM combo came under the Clear Channel banner in 1994. Three years later, the AM was sold off to Genesis Communications, which changed it to NewsTalk AM 1040 WWBA. The FM flipped to The New Star 95.7 WSSR in 1998.
Some names from the history of Mix 96 WMTX are Jon Pinch (GM-1990), Mason Dixon (mornings 1990-96), Kirsten Leigh (promotions-1991), Charlie Davis (news director-1991), Ben Umberger (chief engineer-1991), Pat Brooks (news director-1993) Scott Shannon (syndicated host of “The Big Show,” mornings 1997), Hugh Smith (morning news 1997), “Marvelous” Marvin Boone (mid-days 1997), Mike Reeves (afternoons 1997), Kristy Knight (nights 1997), Dave Cash (overnights 1997), Mike Jennings (weekends 1995-96), and Kevin Malone (GM-1996).
