David W. Wagenvoord

Dave Wagenvoord was from Lansing, MI. After serving in Korea and working with Armed Forces Radio, he attended Michigan State on a golf scholarship and began his career in 1956 as “Dave Wren” playing rock ‘n’ roll in Tallahassee. The veteran broadcaster quickly moved up the ladder of success to become owner-operator of over ten radio stations from Tampa to Hawaii, a broker for selling many radio stations in major markets, and brokering numerous trade arrangements.

He was considered an expert on the barter system, and actively traded, arranged and brokered high-dollar barter transactions for almost forty years, and personally bartered nearly $300 million worth of goods and services, including luxury automobiles, homes and condos, travel, electronics, and entire businesses.

Wagenvoord was president of Radio World, Inc., the licensee of Tampa Bay AM stations WTAN/Clearwater, WZHR/Zephyrhills, and WDCF/Dade City, and Wagenvoord Advertising Group, which owned KLRG-AM/FM in Little Rock and KWAI-AM/Honolulu. More information about the man is also available in a book that he co-authored in 2013 (with Ali Pervez, one of America’s leading marketing educators) titled “No Cash! No Problem!”

“Downtown Dave,” his final radio name on Tampa Bay’s Tan Talk Radio Network of stations, passed away from cancer April 21, 2014 at the age of 82. True to his unique style, he wrote his own obituary and made one last barter deal for his final funeral arrangements.
