Charles Burkhart
Charles was best known as “Charlie B,” deejay and music director for Arcadia’s WAPG. He is probably most remembered for an incident that made the news in early 1986 when he locked himself in the station’s studio and repeatedly played “Take This Job and Shove It” by Johnny Paycheck, telling listeners that he was “fed up” with not receiving a decent salary and would continuing playing the song until management agreed to give him a raise. Police eventually came and escorted him out of the building. However, the incident turned out to be a staged event, and the cops were in on it. By then though, the wire services had already picked up the story.
Burkhart was originally from Cincinnati and came to Sarasota in 1958, graduating from Sarasota High School in 1960. He spent 15 years with WAPG, then left to work at Arcadia’s G. Pierce Wood Hospital. He retired from there in 2000 and moved to Ocala where he passed away in 2006 at the age of 67.
