Charles J. Fernandez
Charles was born and raised in Tampa, and began his career in journalism at the age of 16 writing for the Tampa Times. By the time he was 18, he was already writing editorials for the paper, and went on to work for the Miami Herald as a foreign correspondent.
In 1949, after serving in World War II as a lieutenant commander in the Navy, he joined his brother (Antonio G. “Tony” Fernandez) in establishing Sarasota’s WKXY where he was its news director (1955), program director (1959), and operations manager (1974).
Fernandez passed away from cancer in 1988 at the age of 68.
