George S. Kalman
Although George is originally from the New York City area, he attended the University of Tampa from 1963 to 1967 and got his start in broadcasting at the school’s radio station, WTUN. Following college, he returned to The Big Apple and took a job as a station relations coordinator for NBC Radio.
In 1971, he moved into sales at WMCA and became the number one biller the first year. Three years later, he was national sales manager for WNEW before moving into station management in late 1983 as VP/GM for WNVR in Waterbury, Connecticut.
In the mid 1980’s, George was named president and general manager of Melcor Broadcasting, a producer of adult standard syndicated radio programs featuring artists like Jerry Vale, Perry Como, Patti Page, Vic Damone, and Eddie Fisher. He joined Multicultural Broadcasting in 1999 in a similar capacity for its New York City outlet WNJR.
Today (2009), he is president of Integrity Radio of Florida LLC, the company that acquired Arcadia’s 1480-AM WZTK in 2003 and changed it to WFLN the following year. He turned the zero-billing outlet around and made it into one of southwest Florida’s most listened-to talk stations by adding nationally-syndicated shows featuring Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Alan Colmes, and Joey Reynolds, along with CBS network news each hour.
George did quite a bit of deejay work, too, as Johnny Knox, pulling weekend, part-time, and fill-in work at New York City’s WHN (during its country years) and WEVD-FM, and WFAS in White Plains. And, for about fourteen years, he co-hosted the weekly hour-long “Weekend with Perry (Como)” which aired on approximately 150 stations. He still does a two-hour Como Christmas show each year that airs nationwide and over the World Wide Web.
