WZHR - A History

WZHR-AM 1400 Zephyrhills – Zephyr Broadcasting, Inc. (Judy Huff, president) acquired Zephyrhills’ WPAS in 1994 from Big Z Broadcasting, Inc. (David Zeplowitz, president) and flipped the one-kilowatt non-directional station’s calls to WZHR (ZephyrHills Radio). A studio for WZHR was constructed at the studio/transmitter site of Dade City sister station WDCF on U.S. 301, but its transmitter remained at another site off Ft. King Road in Zephyrhills.

Dave and Lola Wagenvoord (Radio World, Inc.) bought both Pasco County stations WZHR and WDCF in 2002, making them part of the Tan Talk Radio Network, whose programming originated from sister station WTAN in Clearwater.

After the death of Dave Wagenvoord in 2014, the Zephyrhills station was sold to Ferris Waller's Walco Enterprises, LLC for $150,000 in 2023, making it part of Walco's Boss Hogg Radio family of stations.

Other names from WZHR history include David Sharp (operations 1994), Tony Castro (high school sports play-by-play 1988-2000), John Mouw (station manager/engineer 1999-2002, and Mark Nolte (station manager/engineer 2008).
