Eddy Olivares

Growing up on a small ranch in Mexico, Eddy became a singer who fronted a his own band (Eddy Olivares y Su Grupo) all over the country for 28 years, entertaining audiences with regional Mexican music in venues like bars, restaurants, and concerts. As someone who spent much of his life on the road, the former Texas Spanish teacher recorded more than 50 albums between 1975 and 2002 that were popular among Tejanos and Mexicans.
He’s played professionally since 1974 and, before that, was in an elementary school three-guitar trio that played for various school events and holidays, like 16 de Septiembre (Mexico’s Independence Day) and Mother’s Day. His main talent is singing, but he’s also quite a musician, and plays drums, keyboard, bass, and guitar.
Eddy called it quits to touring and recording in 2002, and moved to Polk County to promote Mexican events. Then, he took to the airwaves. First, he leased a radio station in Wauchula, then formed LaRaza Media Group LLC with his wife, Maria, and acquired Auburndale’s AM-1570 WTWB in 2008 from Carpenter’s Home Church, switching its format from news/talk to regional Mexican.
Today (2010), WTWB is very much a family affair. Eddy manages the station and his daughter, Elizabeth, heads up the sales department. Both also do deejay work, as does his son, Junior.
