Hugh Smith

Hugh Smith was a pioneer local TV news anchor for almost 28 years (1963-1991) at Tampa’s WTVT Channel 13 whose television career ended when he was charged a second time with soliciting a prostitute. Shortly after leaving Channel 13, he joined WMTX Mix 96 as news anchor on Mason Dixon’s morning show. He continued in radio until retiring in the late 1990’s.

Born in Madison, South Dakota, Smith grew up in the small town of Pipestone, Minnesota and developed an interest in radio by listening to broadcasters like Edward R. Murrow, Douglas Edwards, Robert Trout, and Eric Sevareid. He went on to earn a degree in journalism from the University of Minnesota and began his career in 1956 as a staff writer for CBS affiliate WCCO radio in Minneapolis.  He also worked in Louisville at WHAS-AM/TV and KVTV Sioux City, Iowa before coming to Tampa in 1963.

Smith died December 16, 2007 at Palms of Pasadena Hospital from melanoma. He was 73.
