WRMD - A History
WRMD-AM 680 St. Petersburg – ZGS Communications acquired Century Broadcasting’s one-kilowatt daytimer WLFF AM-680 in 1991 and flipped its format from nostalgia to Spanish as Rhumba 680 WRMD (Radio MunDo). It was a sister station of Tampa Telemundo TV affiliate WRMD-Channel 49.
Shortly after the purchase, ZGS moved the station’s studios to 2700 W. Martin Luther King Boulevard in Tampa. However, the transmitter and tower site remained off Gandy Boulevard behind Derby Lane.
In October 2006, WRMD adopted a Spanish Christian format as GEnesiS 680-AM WGES – the home of Spanish language broadcasts of Tampa Bay Rays baseball.
Some names from WRMD history include Cathy Mendoza (GM-1992), Eulides Nunez (PD-1992), Art Karmgard (chief engineer-1992), Carlos Beralta (PD-1993), Pablo Plumey (1993-95), Matthew Rodiguez (GM-1994), and Renzo Escalante (sales 2001-2006).
