Spencer Mitchell
Laurens Spencer Mitchell was a Florida boy from Ft. Meade and a World War I Navy veteran. After the war, he returned to Tampa Bay and engaged in a number of business enterprises, mostly in the automotive field, before linking up with WDAE in August 1931.
For 33 years, he was the station’s GM before retiring in August 1964 after WDAE was acquired by Rounsaville Radio. During his years of service, he helped organize the Florida Association of Broadcasters (1941), served as one of its past presidents, and was instrumental in the opening of WDAE-FM (1947). In 1952, The Tampa Times (newspaper and publishing) Company, which owned WDAE, named him advertising director over both the daily newspaper and radio stations.
Mitchell passed away after a lengthy illness on March 17, 1971 at the Veterans Hospital in Gainesville. He was 76.
