Bob Carr

Bob was born in Sampson, Alabama and served in the Air Force before getting into radio at WDAK/Columbus, Georgia while in college. Early on, he spent some time in Tampa Bay doing overnights with WLCY as 'Beachcomber Bob' before moving on to greater fame in Atlanta with WSB, WGST, and WQXI.
During the time WQXI-FM was still automated, he was the “nameless morning jock.” Then, in the spring of 1973, he developed a friendship with WQXI-AM morning deejay Gary McKee. What started out as off-air banter between the two, developed into Carr doing character bits on McKee’s morning show as Willis “The Guard” Caswell, a redneck building security man with an attitude.
When the McKee show ended in 1988, Bob never again returned to the airwaves and, instead, spent the next 17 years as a movie theater projectionist before lung disease forced him into early retirement. On October 27, 2008, he passed away in Chamblee, Georgia at the age of 66.
From 1982 until 1983, Carr was president of the Atlanta Chapter of The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the Grammy’s parent organization. He was honored by the State of Georgia with its Outstanding Georgia Citizen Award in 1984, and a lifetime achievement award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association for his 1978 to 1988 work co-hosting Atlanta’s MDA Labor Day Telethon.
