Gene McKay

Gene (Eugene Klemick) worked afternoons on Tampa Bay's WSUN and mornings on WDAE in the early and mid 1960’s.

A decade after leaving Tampa Bay for Columbia, SC’s AM-560 WIS in 1966, the Chicago native and fellow radio vets Dave Wright, Bill Benton and Dennis Waldrop purchased Columbia’s news/talk 100.1 WSCQ-FM and changed its format to adult contemporary, at which time McKay became the morning show host, while Wright and Benton held various on-air positions and Waldrop became the station's GM.

The group sold the station in 1997, but Gene continued doing the morning show until his death in 2007 at the age of 73. In addition to his radio work during his 40+ years in the market, he was also the announcer for University of South Carolina Gamecocks football and basketball.
