Jim began his radio career in Polk County news at WSIR in the 1950’s. That’s where he picked up the moniker, “Mr. Winter Haven.” Because he seemed to know everyone and everything that went on in the town, the name stuck with him through the years.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s Jim worked at other stations in the Winter Haven area, including WGTO at Cypress Gardens beginning in 1976, and then at WVFM in Lakeland starting in 1982. He returned to Winter Haven and WSIR in 1986, followed by five years at WHNR. In 1995 he became a reporter for WONN in Lakeland. Jim left WONN in 2005 to become the Media Coordinator for the City of Winter Haven where part of his job includes producing the radio program Winter Haven Focus to run on several area stations.
Jim has been busy outside his radio station obligations, too. He is a Past President of the Winter Haven Lions Club and Past Member of the Board of Directors and an Accredited Public Relations Professional of the Florida Public Relations Association. He was a recipient of the President’s Award from the Dick Pope Chapter of the organization. In 1977-1978, Jim was named Agribusiness Broadcaster of the Year by the Agribusiness Institute of Florida. He is also a member and Deacon at Parkland Baptist Church.
Today (2005) Jim and his wife, Jean, make their home in Winter Haven.
