Tom Wilnau

Tom was born in Chicago in 1926 and also went to school there. During World War II he joined the Coast Guard and served aboard Navy tanks in the Atlantic. When the war was over he attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science and became a licensed embalmer and funeral director, and for 12 years managed a funeral home.

In addition to his funeral home experience, he managed Ramada Inns. At one time he was the auditor of the Ramada Inn at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport but at the age of 46 he suffered an industrial accident and found himself unable to continue his management career.

In the early 1970’s Tom applied for a part-time position at WVFM and got it. After a few weeks though, part-time turned to full-time when the regular announcer left and he was asked to take over the morning show.

He was also WVFM’s Public Affairs Director and had a half-hour program on Sunday nights at 9 that featured interviews with various community leaders. In addition to his regular duties at the radio station, he also found time to teach two courses in radio at Florida Southern College and run his own public relations firm.

Tom passed away from heart failure in 1983.
