John Wright
A graduate of Wauchula High School, John worked at a number of radio stations in central Florida from 1963 to 1971 including the one in his hometown, WAUC, in Wauchula. Other early stops included WAVP in Avon Park, WJCM and WSEB in Sebring, and WINQ in Tampa. During those years he worked as a staff announcer, production manager, music director, news reporter, news director, and program director. In 1967 and 1968 he worked for WEDU, Tampa’s educational TV station, in public affairs and various other production operations.
John didn’t make his career in broadcasting, though, opting instead for one in higher education. He was awarded his B.A. in 1971 and M.A. in 1973, both from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and his Ph.D from Ohio State University in 1977.
John taught mass communications at Purdue University-Fort Wayne and the University of Alabama-Birmingham before joining the University of Florida faculty in 1982 to teach areas of telecommunications research and regulation, media law and management, and journalism.
Today (2006), John is the Executive Associate Dean of the UF’s College of Journalism and Communications and a Professor in the Department of Telecommunications.
