Maria Janello
A New York native, Maria caught the radio bug while attending Cazenovia College near Syracuse and was hooked after auditioning for a spot on the campus station. Her first job was in her high school town of Watkins Glen.
Tired of scraping snow of her car’s windshield, Maria moved to Tampa and landed a gig at classical station WXCR in 1988 doing news and traffic. When the station changed to oldies U92, she survived the changes and found herself hosting the morning show for four years. She left to get married in 1994 and had no plans of returning to radio but found she missed being behind the mike. When she heard about a new jazz station coming to Tampa Bay, she knew she wanted to be a part of it and became WSJT’s first morning drive host in 1995.
Maria left in 1999 and was replaced by Tampa Bay radio vet George Nix.
