Bob Helmick
Originally from Hattiesburg, MS, Bob came to Lakeland in 1964. This Lakeland High School graduate worked weekends at WONN beginning in 1967 and went on to PD WIPC in Lake Wales, Lakeland’s WQPD, and WPCV in its early years at the Florida Citrus Showcase studios in Winter Haven.
However, Bob didn’t stay in the radio business and, instead, made his career in education, beginning as a classroom teacher. He advanced to Principal at his alma mater, Lakeland High School, from 1985 to 1989, and was Assistant Superintendent, Division of Secondary Education, for the Polk County School District at his retirement in 1999.
Bob worked as a counselor for disadvantaged youth for two years before returning to the classroom and today (2007) teaches chemistry at Bartow High School.
