Salem Communications
Salem is a leading media company, primarily in the nation’s largest markets, founded by Stuart W. Epperson and Edward Atsinger III in 1986. It owns radio stations that specialize in religious and conservative talk formats, provides internet content, and publishes magazines and books targeting an audience interested in Christian and family-themed, conservative values. The company also owns the Salem Radio Network, a syndicator of talk, news and music programming to more than 2,000 affiliates, and Salem Radio Representatives, a national radio advertising sales force.
When purchasing new stations, Salem acquires outlets with powerful transmitters – the opposite of how many Christian broadcasters operate, where it’s common practice to buy larger numbers of low-power translators. The company is a for-profit corporation and its stations are commercial operations. Most program Contemporary Christian music, Christian teaching, Conservative News/Talk, or Christian talk, although it also owns a few oldies stations, a country station, a sports station, and a Hawaiian music station.
As of July 2007, Salem’s stations in Greater Tampa Bay include WTBN-AM, WTWD-AM, WGUL-AM, and WLSS-AM. Its Orlando area outlets are WORL-AM, WHIM-AM, and WTLN-AM.
