Bobby Ocean
Tom Martinkovic was better known as Bobby Ocean on the air at Tampa Bay’s y95 WYNF in 1979-80. His earlier Florida work included jocking as Tom Collins at WIRK in West Palm Beach (1974), Orlando’s WBJW (1976), and WSTU in Ft. Pierce (1976). The first time he used the Bobby Ocean moniker was at WIVY in Jacksonville (1977).
Outside Florida, he was Chris Kelly at KWST in Los Angeles, but returned to the Bobby Ocean moniker again at KBEQ-FM in Kansas City, MO (1982). Although he had done some broadcast engineering work in Jacksonville and Los Angeles, Martinkovic moved into broadcast engineering fulltime in 1986 as chief engineer for WCMO-FM, another Kansas City station.
In 1998, Tom was named chief engineer for Clear Channel’s (later iHeart Media) Mix 100.7 WMTX and moved his family back to Tampa. He also did engineering for WTBN and WDAE.
On September 26, 2016, The Johnson City, NY native passed away in Tampa at the age of 59. He was a member of the Society of Broadcast Engineers and operated Bobby Oh! Productions, a commercial and voice-over company.
