Mike Calta

Originally from Staten Island, N.Y., Mike was a promotions intern at Tampa’s WFLZ in 1992 before joining Bubba the Love Sponge  (Todd Clem) on the night shift in 1995 where he became known as ‘Cowhead’. A year later, he and Bubba moved to mornings at Clearwater’s 98 Rock WXTB.

Following a falling out with Clem in 2000, he was hired by Infinity Broadcasting to produce WQYK Sports Radio 1010’s Sports Chix midday show. Then he moved to WRBQ and did mornings with A.W. Pantoja. After that show ended after only a year, he found himself back in middays at WQYK-AM co-hosting the “Cowhead and Brent Show” with Brent Pearson.

As the show picked up listeners and became more popular, Infinity moved it to afternoons, then to mornings, and ultimately to a better signal on its “kick-ass country” outlet, Outlaw 92.5 WYUU. When word got out that the station had hired a new GM known for flipping stations to a Spanish format, Mike knew is time there would soon be up. Shortly afterwards, Outlaw 92.5 became La Nueva 92.5, Tampa’s first Hispanic FM.

In 2006, “The Cowhead Show” moved to mornings at Clear Channel’s 98 Rock WXTB and then to afternoons at Cox’s WHPT-FM 102.5 The Bone. Calta retired the name ‘Cowhead’ in April 2014, preferring to call his program “The Mike Calta Show,” and replaced Bubba the Love Sponge in morning drive the following September.
