Connoisseur of the Obscure
Jim Maloy was “The Connoisseur of the Obscure,” a frequent guest on Bob Crews’ early morning show on WONN in 2001 and 2002 after having been a popular feature for three years previously when Bob was doing mornings on WLKF. As “The Connoisseur,” he showcased obscure music (obtained from who knows where) and trivia from his home studio while having his morning cup of Ovaltine.
The feature started as a joke, but listener reaction turned it into one of the high points of the two morning shows. Jim says he’s remembered more for portraying “The Connoisseur” for five minutes a day two or three times a week with Bob than from his own four hour daily radio show on sister station WWRZ 98.3, The Rose.
Jim often received phone calls from listeners during the day who had heard him earlier that morning and usually they were inquiring about a song he had played or asking where they could obtain a copy.
“The Connoisseur” made only one personal appearance - at a live morning show remote broadcast in 2002 at Lakeland’s Reececliff Restaurant.
