WWOJ - A History

WWOJ-FM 106.3 Avon Park – WWOJ was first licensed in 1982 to Highlands Ridge, Inc. (Ralph Hunter, president). The 3-kilowatt station was built by Jim Johnson and Dugan Fry, and operated on 106.3 FM from studios in a small strip center on Highway 27.
In 1985, Highlands Media Co., Inc. (Robert S. Castellanos, president) bought WWOJ and flipped it to a country music format. Two years later, the studios were moved to a suite of offices on the second floor of the Fairmont Cinema Square in Sebring.
Casey Communications, Inc., acquired WWOJ in the mid 90’s. The station moved down the FM dial to 99.1 and boosted power to 10,000 watts. In 1998, it was added to the Cohan Radio Group (Peter L. Coughlin, president).
Other names from WWOJ history include Dugan Fry (GM-1982), John Howard (sales manager-1983), Beth Schoen (news director-1983), Gary Petersen (station manager/sales manager-1986), Glenn Moree (PD/music director-1986), Sherrie Lynn (news director-1986), Jim Johnson (chief engineer-1986; president of Highlands Media-1989), John Meder (afternoons/PD-1987; promotions-1989; sales manager-1993; mornings), Jim Porter (news director-1987), Robert N. Young (GM/sales manager-1989), J.J. Kale (PD-1989), Barry Foster (news director-1989), Karen Sasnow (GM-1993), Stacy Clark (office-1999; mid-days-2001), Joe Donelan (afternoons-2003), Scott Maxon (weekends-2007; afternoons 2008), and Jeanne Wright (weekends-2010).
