WAMA - A History
WAMA-AM 1550 Tampa – Longtime Tampa country outlet WYOU, which switched to a Spanish format in 1977, became WAMA (“AMA is Spanish for “Love”) when the FCC granted an assignment of its license from WYOU Radio, Inc. to Efrain Archilla-Roig in 1986. WAMA’s transmitter and tower site remained at the same location, off St. Paul Street, west of South 54th Street in Tampa, but the station moved offices and studios to 402 N. Reo Street.
Since 1997, WAMA has been licensed to WAMA, Inc. (ZGS Communications), and today (2009), branded La Invasora 1550, broadcasts from studios at 4201 N. Armenia Avenue. Although on the air 24 hours with 10,000 watts daytime from a single tower, its nighttime power is greatly reduced (to 133 watts) to protect clear channel stations CBE in Windsor, Ontario and XERUV-AM in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.
Other names from WAMA history include: Victor Lanz (GM), Sylvia Abreu (PD-1992), Pablo Plumey (air talent 1997-98), Ronald J.
