Don Coe

Don is originally from upstate New York where he started his radio career. In the late 70’s he worked in the Utica-Rome area at AM’s WKAL, WLFH, and The Country Giant WADR. Then, in 1980, he moved to Florida and joined Sarasota’s legendary AM-1450 WSPB and its sister station, soft rock WSPB-FM, working alongside colleagues Peter Jahns, Stan Grams, and Arch Howel.

In 1982, he was lured across town to AM-1280 WWZZ by Dave Allison and GM Paul Delaney, who had just put “The Music of Your Life” format on the old WYND, which was getting a lot of attention. As Don Clark, he went on to become general manager and WWZZ, very visible in the community, had several years of solid ratings.

The calls were attached to everything possible. There were successful bumper sticker campaigns, billboards, a huge listener membership club, and the station used the Exhibition Hall (formerly the Municipal Auditorium) and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall as venues to host dances and big band concerts.

By the late 1980’s, he decided he had to stop playing and make a living. That meant thinking on the idea of another career – something else where he could make better money.

Today (2014), Don lives in Texas and works in management at the American Airlines Integrated Operations Center in Fort Worth, where he has been employed since July 1990.
