Russ is from New Haven, Connecticut. After graduating from the University of New Haven, he served with Uncle Sam in the Air Force, and then began his broadcasting career over WOWW in Naugatuck, Connecticut in 1969.
Rod Weller, then PD at WFLA AM/FM, hired him in 1974 as a replacement for morning man Jack Harris, who had accepted a position with WRC in Washington, DC. He remained with the AM until 1980 when he moved over to the FM, and then decided, a couple years after that, to pursue freelance voiceover work.
Russ has voiced for the Media General Broadcast Group (which includes NewsChannel 8 WFLA-TV), WEDU Channel 3, Walt Disney World (monorail system), AT&T, Amtrak, Winn Dixie, Red Lobster, Acura, Daytona USA, the National Safety Council, Ford Motor Corp., and numerous other clients. Today (2010), he continues to lend his voice to various companies and projects, and works from his home studio in Tampa.
