Sam Latimer

Sam moved to Tampa from Bradenton in 1942 and joined WFLA radio a decade later. He was named news director in 1953, and became the first news anchor when WFLA-TV Ch. 8 went on the air in 1955.  After 25 years with the Tribune stations, he retired in 1977.

The Minneapolis native received the president’s award from the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce (1971) for his work as a member of the Hillsborough County Industrial Development Authority, and the Liberty Bell Award from the Hillsborough County Bar Association (1973) for outstanding community service. In 1984, he was appointed to the Governor’s Constituency on Children’s Services by Gov. Bob Graham to study juvenile problems in the state.

Sam was president of the Tampa Historical Society at the time of his death, May 28, 1988, at the age of 76.
