Glenn W. Cherry

Dr. Glenn W. Cherry is president/CEO of Tama Broadcasting, Inc. and serves on its board of directors (2008). He started in media sales in 1978 selling advertising for his family owned-and-operated newspaper. In 1980, he received a BS degree in biology from Morehouse College and, in 1984, a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Tuskegee University. From 1984 to 1988, he was on active duty in the U.S. Air Force where he rose to the rank of captain, and was honorably discharged from reserve duty in 1991.

Dr. Cherry started his professional career in advertising media sales in 1978 selling ad space for his family owned-and-operated newspaper. In 1989, he bought his first radio station – WPUL-AM 1590 in Daytona Beach – followed by WCSZ-AM in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina and WTMP-AM 1150 in Tampa in 1997 where he served as GM until 2007.

Under Cherry’s leadership, Tama acquired Dade City’s WMGG-FM 96.1 in 2002 and changed its calls to WTMP-FM. The company also expanded into the Jacksonville market with WHJX-FM, WSJF-FM, WJSJ-FM, and WOKF-FM. In 2004 acquisitions were made in the Savannah, Georgia market with WSSJ-FM, WMZD-FM, and WSGA-FM.

In addition to his work as a broadcast executive and serving on the board of the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB), Dr. Cherry was a political appointee in the Clinton administration at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and worked a six-month assignment in the East Wing of the White House. He has also held several positions in veterinary medicine, including Confidential Assistant to the Administrator of APHIS at the Department of Agriculture, State Veterinarian for the Maryland Racing Commission, Supervisory Veterinarian at the National Institutes of Health, and Biologist at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
