Clay Daniels

The son of an Alabama construction worker, Clay became WHOO’s program director around 1970 and pulled afternoons on the air. He had already been working for the station since 1968, the year it switched from Top 40 to country.

Outside the station, he fronted the Clay Daniels Band, which often opened for top country acts who came to perform in the Central Florida area, and recorded for Orlando business tycoon Glen W. Turner’s Soundcot record label. He was also the long-time voice for Sonny King’s Orange Buick, a local auto dealership. In later years, he and a couple friends, Roy Marler and Jeff Blair, organized a musical trio and performed as The Three Amigos.

Clay passed away from cancer on October 17, 2009, one day after his 72nd birthday. Recognized by the Florida Country Music Association for his many contributions to the music business, both as a performer and on-air personality, he had most recently worked with Turner Marketing, a Sanford telemarketing firm.
