Charlie Champion

Charlie moved to Central Florida in 1964 as PD for Orlando’s then-Top 40 WHOO-AM 990 and from there went on to program successful stations in Chattanooga, Knoxville, and Louisville. In the 1970’s he returned to Florida and landed gigs at Clearwater’s WQXM (as PD) and WAZE, Tampa’s WYOU (mornings), and St. Petersburg’s WSUN (mornings) and WWBA.

Later stops included Lancaster, California where he became station manager for an AM/FM operation. It was while working there in 1989 that he passed away after suffering a fatal heart attack in his sleep.
