Barry Michaels

Barry developed an interest in radio in the late 60’s while in high school. Early gigs included stints with WYTI/ Rocky Mount, VA (first part-time job), WFIC/Collinsville, VA (first full-time position), WLOE and WCBX/Eden, NC, WQBX/Blacksburg, VA, and WMVA in his hometown, Martinsville, VA.

As he worked his way up the ladder, the stations started to get a whole lot bigger. In 1978, he joined WROV/Roanoke to do midday's. Then, when he moved to Orlando’s WBJW/WLOF in 1981, he switched to mornings. From that point on, he was always heard in morning drive.

Meanwhile, his list of top stations grew – WQSR/Baltimore (1984), Miami’s WMXJ (1986), KLME/Phoenix (1988), Houston’s KIKK (1991), and the ABC Radio Networks/Dallas (1993) where he was heard on over a hundred stations across the United States (and even more worldwide via the Armed Forces Radio Network). In 2002, he began hosting “Michaels In the Morning” on WFOG/WWSO in Virginia Beach, then Clear Channel’s WYYD/Roanoke in 2005.

In early 2010, Barry decided to make a major change and, since he always loved Florida, decided to return. So, he quit Clear Channel and moved to the Ocala/Gainesville area and landed a job doing (you guessed it) mornings for Dix Communications’ classic rock WIND-FM (a three-station simulcast operation over WNDD-FM/Ocala, WNDT-FM/Gainesville, and WNDN-FM/Chiefland).

During his 30+ years in the business, he’s reached numerous milestones – nominated as Billboard’s “Major Market Air Personality Of The Year,” nominated twice as the Country Music Association’s “Major Market Air Personality Of The Year,” and nominated “Music Director Of The Year “- Bobby Poe Convention. He was also the first radio personality selected to broadcast from Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, and Universal Studios Florida.
