Mac Allen

Mac Allen (Joseph Emmett McDermott) was born and raised in Nyack, New York. After attending high school in Philadelphia, he went on to get a degree in radio and television from the University of Miami, beginning his career there at the campus radio station. By 1962, he was pulling the overnight shift at WFUN and, later joined its chief rival, WQAM.

In a 1967 move to Orlando, he replaced long-time morning man Rock Robinson at WHOO. After a little over six months there, he moved on to WABB in Mobile, and spent about a year in AM drive. Other stops in the late 60’s included KQXI in Denver as PD and weekends on KLZ-AM. He also got his first phone license  and landed mornings in Nashville at WKDA, where he would eventually become program director.

While in Music City, Mac worked in promotions for Acuff-Rose Publishing and even produced a few country records for its Hickory label in the early 70’s. By the middle of the decade, he had become the national program director for Sonderling Broadcasting.

In the 80’s, he was PD for Ft. Lauderdale’s WKQS for about two years, became feature programs manager for the Mutual Broadcasting System, head of the broadcast licensing division of Sesac, Inc., and worked in sales for WQAM during its country music period.
