Pete Porter

Peter Porter (Donald C. Lapp) was a member of the Announcers Club at Hamburg (NY) High School and officially made his commercial radio debut in 1957 with WICU-AM in Erie, PA. After graduation, he attended Fredonia State Teachers College in western New York where he was active with its radio station, WCVF.

From 1961 to 1966, he worked as Don Porter in Dunkirk and Fredonia, NY, and during a stint as PD at WWYN in Erie. In 1964, he moved to Florida and became Bob Raleigh briefly at WIRK in West Palm Beach before returning to the Don Porter moniker. His name changed again in 1966 – this time to Peter Porter while doing nights on WHLO in Akron, OH.

Peter joined Orlando’s WHOO as music director and early afternoon jock in 1967, and picked up some extra change on the weekends doing booth announcing for an Orlando television station. He left WHOO the following year and jumped to the midday slot at chief WLOF, its chief Top 40 competitor. Later Florida stints included Tampa Bay’s AM-620 WSUN in the early 80’s.

Peter passed away in 2011 at the age of 73 at his home in Georgetown, Delaware.
