Joe Garagiola

Joe was a journeyman catcher for nine seasons with the Cardinals, Pirates, Cubs, and Giants baseball clubs, who began to develop an interest in broadcasting as early as 1950. He retired as a player after the 1954 season and was offered a job with the Cardinals’ broadcast team. He possessed a friendly folksy manner, and the audience liked that.

Throughout the 1960’s, Joe was behind the microphone covering the Game of the Week, All-Star Game, and World Series for NBC-TV. He was also on the broadcast crew (sharing the mike with greats like Phil Rizzuto and Red Barber) for the New York Yankees telecasts from 1965 to 1967. Then, there was the Today show from 1962 to 1973 and the California Angels games in 1990.

Joe was also the owner of WPCV from 1973 to 1976. A native of St. Louis, he and his wife, Audrie, make their home today in Scottsdale, Arizona.
