Jerry R. Hughes
Jerry was from Huntsville, Alabama and moved to Lakeland from Forest, Mississippi in 1973 when his father, Hugh R. Hughes, bought Lakeland’s one-kilowatt WWAB-AM. Since that time, he has worn numerous hats, including those of a deejay (he was once known as “Brother Love”), talk show host, station manager, and station owner.
In 1991, he began a phone-in talk show, “Straight Talk with Jerry Hughes,” that aired live Monday through Friday from the WWAB studios. He also hosted “Conceived in Liberty” on Saturday nights. Both shows were heard not only over WWAB but also on over 200 other stations around the country via satellite from the Accent Radio Network.
Jerry passed away on June 1st, 2012 from heart failure at 62.
