Dan Dermody

Dan was born in Highland, Illinois, the oldest of seven children. In 1962, after graduating from Mater Dei High School in Breese, Illinois, he joined the Air Force, serving on Okinawa as well as in North Carolina. At the time he was honorably discharged in November 1967, he had attained the rank of sergeant.

His broadcast career began immediately upon graduation from high school in 1961 and took him to stations in Illinois, Okinawa (by way of Armed Forces Radio while in the military), North Carolina, and Florida. In the Sunshine State he was Dan Daniels on the air at Cypress Gardens’ WGTO and Lakeland’s WQPD.

In 1986 Dan returned to Illinois and joined Peoria’s heritage country station WXCL. He spent 18 years there and held positions of program director, music director and morning show host. In February 2005, he moved to mornings at all new Classic Country 1290 WIRL, but that gig ended in May 2009 when the station was forced to make cutbacks due to the bad economy.

Dan was named "Illinois Country Music Air Personality of the Year" by the Illinois Country Music Association in 1994 and again each year from 2002 to 2008. As an ambassador for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, he hosted the "St. Jude Radiothon" for 13 years. He’s also been involved with other charitable organizations, including Easter Seals UCP, The Arthritis Foundation of Central Illinois, Cystic Fibrosis, and The Children’s Home of Peoria.
