This Tampa native and King High School graduate got his inspiration for a radio career from some of Tampa Bay’s outstanding deejay talent of the 1950’s and 1960’s, including WDAE’s Bob Hoffer and WALT’s Marv Ray. In 1964, while attending the University of South Florida in Tampa, he stopped by WUSF-FM, the college station, which had studios in the basement of the school’s library. They let him do some station breaks and ignited a fire in him that never died out.
Dave’s first radio job was at Tampa’s WPKM-FM which, at the time, operated out of studios in the Bayshore Royal Hotel. When it was set to automate in 1967, he got a job at Dade City’s WDCF playing country music until one day someone from a bigger station heard him. That led to his being hired by WGUL in New Port Richey where he remained until the early 1980’s, except for a short stint at WWBA in 1971.
In 1983 he signed on WXCV 95.3 in Crystal River as PD and morning air personality. About a year later, he left and began an eight-year afternoon run with Lakeland’s WVFM (later changed to WEZY) until automation replaced him in 1992. After that, he joined Jacor/Clear Channel/Cox’s WDUV-FM The Dove (as PD and afternoon drive host) and later Clear Channel Sarasota’s AM-1320 WDDV The Dove.
Today (2014), Dave is retired and lives in Brandon.
