Uncle Bob & the Funnies

Bob Porter hosted a show called “Uncle Bob and the Funnies” on WLAK around 1947 and 1948. Each Sunday morning he would ask all the boys and girls to gather around the radio while he read the funnies to them out of the newspaper before Sunday school.

In real life Bob was a shoe salesman who spent 54 years in the business, starting in 1942 with Butler Shoes downtown on Main Street. After a promotion to manager he was transferred to Daytona Beach but eventually returned to Lakeland.

Bob worked at several shoe stores before opening his own on North Florida Avenue in Lakeland and in Orlando. In the mid 1970’s he rented space at the flea market off Memorial Boulevard near Kathleen High School and opened Bob’s Boots.

In 1996 Bob retired due to declining health and passed away in 2005 at the age of 84.
