Ed Cain

Ed came to Lakeland from Boston, Massachusetts in 1960 at the age of 18 and was hired by WONN GM Duane McConnell to do news. He was promoted to News Director in 1961 and handled Kathleen High School football play-by-play during his two-year stay there. In 1962 he left Lakeland and joined the staff of a gubernatorial candidate who was running for election, but returned a little over a year later as News Director at WLAK which had recently been bought by Roland Potter (Sentinel Broadcasting).

Leaving Lakeland again in 1964, Ed headed for Jacksonville where he spent five years as Sports Director for CBS affiliate WJXT-TV Channel 4. During that time he was also play-by-play announcer for Florida’s first hockey team, the Jacksonville Rockets. Over the years, he’s called games for major teams like the Minnesota Vikings and the New York Islanders, has been News Director for stations in Texas and Tennessee, and hosted a radio talk show at KVI in Seattle.

After he retired, Ed continued to live in Seattle doing occasional voice-overs, and passed away in 2016 at a facility in Oregon.
