Mike Lusk

After Mike (real name Mike Lusk) graduated from King High School in Tampa in 1973, he attended the University of South Florida before beginning his radio career the following year at WPLA, using the air-name Jimmy Boyd. His time at the Plant City station would turn out to be a short one, only about six months, due to an offer he accepted from Tampa’s WQYK (as Lyn Michaels).

By early 1976, he was doing overnights in Lakeland at Joe Garagiola’s WONN. That fall, he joined WLCY-FM in St. Petersburg, which was flipping from automation to live jocks under the moniker Y95, and switched his name to Mike Rivers, the name that would stay with him for the remainder of his radio career. After his stint there, he moved a bit further south along Florida’s west coast to do mornings for Sarasota’s WYND.

In the spring of 1979, the Richmond, VA native joined the Navy. At the end of his four-year hitch, he resumed his radio career and worked at a number of stations, including WOWO in Ft. Wayne, IN. After moving back to his hometown, he started a “Q Morning Zoo” morning show on Q94 WRVQ, and went on to do weekend work at Cox’s WMXB Mix 103-7 and daily news and sports reports for stations in Charlottesville and Harrisburg (VA).

Mike passed away after a long battle with cancer in December 2013 at the age of 59. His last show was for Richmond’s Classic Rock 96.5 WKLR in April of 2013.
