John Newman
John’s interest in radio, TV and electronics goes back to his days as a child visiting radio shops with his dad to purchase repair parts. By 1967, he had begun his radio career while a high school senior at his hometown station in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. He also worked at several other stations doing some engineering duties, announcing, and sales while attending Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where he majored in Electrical Engineering.
Newman bought his first station in 1974, WGGO-AM in Salamanca, New York and, in 1983, acquired Winter Haven’s WZNG-AM 1360 from Dave and Diane Buerger. After switching the calls to WYXY, he sold it in 1987 and joined Hall Communications in Lakeland as sales manager of its WONN/WPCV combo. Moving to Lake City (FL) in 1998, he formed Newman Media, Inc., and purchased WNFB-FM and WDSR-AM. He was also an owner of two FMs in New York.
John passed away January 4, 2015 at the age of 65.
