Ernie Legge

Born in Chicago, Ernie moved to Florida with his family in 1936 and settled in the Melbourne area where he picked up his diploma from Melbourne High School in 1945. After serving in the Navy, he attended the University of Florida and later returned to Melbourne to work at WMMB after graduating from a California broadcast school.

In 1958 Ernie was pulling mid-days on Orlando’s WLOF Radio and had become the first newscaster for WLOF-TV Channel 9 (now WFTV), the new ABC-TV affiliate. By 1963, he was working at WKIS when he moved to Lakeland to become Operations Manager at WONN. For many years he was a news reporter covering happenings at the Kennedy Space Center, and at the time of his retirement in 1999, was working in sales for WMEL in Melbourne.

Ernie passed away in 2005 in Palm Bay, FL at the age of 78.
