Gene Schlei

Gene joined the WONN sales team in 1967 from Fremacs, a Lakeland menswear store, where he had been manager. He moved across town to WLAK in 1970 and remained with the station through its ownership change the following year when it became WQPD.

In 1974, he went into business for himself and established Schlei Supply and Cleaning Service. Five years later, he opened his first food service business, the House of Cheese at Grove Park Shopping Center. The Edelweiss Café was added next door in 1983, the same year he acquired the Christina Smokehouse on South Florida Avenue.

Gene passed away in 2001.
