Doris Smith
Doris, the wife of WPLA co-owner Ercelle Smith, was happy being a stay-at-home mom to their three kids - daughters Debbie and Janice, and son Clayton - until a position opened up in the traffic department at the radio station in 1964. Starting part-time building the daily program logs, Doris later came on board full-time to head up the bookkeeping and billing department by the early 1970’s. She remained with the station until shortly before it was sold in 1987.
Doris had a life outside the radio station, too. She was a member of the Plant City Woman’s Club and, for 16 years, a chaperone for the Florida Strawberry Festival queen and her court.
Doris and Ercelle had been happily married since 1953. After he passed away from heart problems in April of 2002. Doris then married local physician, Dr. A.J. Peacock, who had recently lost his wife. Unfortunately, Dr. Peacock died a year later.
Doris still lives in Plant City.
